Liz Meyer Loses 10 Year Battle with Cancer

Liz MeyerOn August 26th, American songwriter, Liz Meyer known throughout the European bluegrass music community lost her battle with cancer. She was an avid bluegrass singer, songwriter and an active participant with the European Bluegrass Associations and the European version of the World of Bluegrass. Liz Meyer was based in the Netherlands and her songs are often more well known here than her own recordings. Of course, the songs are excellent and "Blue Lonesome Wind" was the featured title cut on an album by Auldridge, Bennett & Gaudreau, and another song, "Bad Seed" is featured on a recent Laurie Lewis and Tom Rozum album.

2011 Sandwich Fair Fiddle Contest Part of 124 Year Fair

Sandwich Fair 2011The 124th Andwich Fair takes place at 6 PM Wednesday September 7, 2011 in Sandwich, Illinois. This Sandwich fair is over a century old and still continuing and runs 5 days beginning September 7th. Immediately following the Ashton Gap musical performance, will be the fiddle contest. All ages are welcome to enter with three separate age divisions, which include children through adult. The purse for the contest totals over $800.00, and the entry fee is free with the purchase of a fair ticket. The contest is considered to be traditional fiddle music as opposed to classical, jazz, pop or rock. Traditional styles include Irish, French, Cajun, other National/Ethnic styles, Country, and Bluegrass.

Sierra Hull Performs Free Concerts at ICA/Kendall Square Sept 1st

Sierra HullBerklee College of Music's Summer in the City series continues with two free outdoor concerts by Sierra Hull and Highway 111. Hull, 19, is a Berklee student and bluegrass mandolin prodigy who signed to Rounder Records at age 13, and has performed with Alison Krauss and other top musicians. The concerts take place on Thursday, September 1 at noon in Kendall Square, 300 Athenaeum Street, in Cambridge; and 6 p.m. at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Putnam Investment Plaza, 100 Northern Avenue, in Boston.

World of Bluegrass Getting Closer as Details Emerge

World of BluegrassThe members of the International Bluegrass Music Association are getting ready for their annual convention, trade show, awards show and festival. The week is called, "The World of Bluegrass" and it will be a world of just that. Nashville, Tennessee will find bluegrass music popping up everywhere besides the show itself. Venues, including the legendary Station Inn, and the Ryman Auditorium will be hosting bluegrass artists.

Feds on Warpath Against Gibson Instruments...Again

Gibson InstrumentsFor the second time, federal agents raided Gibson Instruments offices in both Nashville and Memphis Wednesday. The Federal Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. has suggested that the use of wood from India that is not finished by Indian workers is illegal, not because of U.S. law, but because it is the Justice Department's interpretation of a law in India. (If the same wood from the same tree was finished by Indian workers, the material would be legal.) This action was taken without the support and consent of the government in India. Look It Up - 'Americana Music' Now in Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Merriam-WebsterNashville, TN -- Merriam-Webster announced today, as reported by the Associated Press, the inclusion of the musical definition of the word Americana to its Collegiate Dictionary. Americana joins Tweet, m-commerce and around 100 other words whose use is now widely recognized enough to be a part of today's lexicon. According to the dictionary's editors Americana's third definition is "a genre of American music having roots in early folk and country music".

A Comment on the International Bluegrass Music Association

Banjo Camp North Fall Edition Kicks Off September 16

Banjo Camp NorthBanjo Camp North Fall Edition (BCN-FE) is a weekend-long celebration of the 5-string banjo in both old time and bluegrass styles! World-class banjoists make up the full-time and "adjunct" faculties. The camp has invited several top flight fiddlers and guitarists to teach about playing with other instruments and jamming, and to be on hand to help make those all-night jams something special. In response to previous attendees requests, this year we are adding a Fiddle Track for both Bluegrass and Old Time, plus we will emphasize banjo and fiddle duet playing. Another area of study is singing, solo and group. The camp kicks off September 16 so now is the time to sign up if you're planning on attending.

Government of Canada Grants $82,951 to Promote New Richmond Bluegrass Festival

New Richmond Bluegrass FestivalThe Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, announces the awarding of $82,951 in non-repayable funding, spread over three years, to the Gaspesian British Heritage Village to promote the New Richmond Bluegrass Festival outside Quebec.
