Carter Fold Hosts Raymond McLain & Morehead State Mountain Music Ambassadors

Raymond McLain and the Morehead State Mountain Music AmbassadorsHiltons, VA -- Raymond McLain has been performing at Carter Family shows since Janette Carter first began presenting concerts in the old A.P. Carter Grocery in 1974 – first with his family, the McLain Family Band – and later with ETSU when he was head of the ETSU Bluegrass, Old Time, and Country Music program. Raymond is currently the Director of the Kentucky Center for Traditional Music at Morehead State University. He also performs, produces, and records. Raymond serves on the Carter Music Center’s board of directors in addition to serving as the Artistic Director at the Fold. Raymond’s father served on the Music Center’s board from the time it was created in 1979. When his father died, Raymond agreed to occupy the board seat his dad once held. The long and loving friendship between the McLain and Carter families dates back nearly 40 years to the early 1970s.

Kilby Spencer & the Crooked Road Ramblers at Carter Fold Saturday

Crooked Road RamblersHiltons, VA -- Saturday, April 4th, 2015, at 7:30 p.m., the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a special concert by Kilby Spencer & the Crooked Road Ramblers. Admission to the concert is $10 for adults, $1 for children 6 to 11, under age 6 free. The Crooked Road Ramblers play traditional old time dance music from the mountains of Virginia and North Carolina. Members of the band are Kilby Spencer on fiddle, John Perry on guitar, Peco Watson on clawhammer banjo, Donald Hill on guitar and vocals, Wayne Dye on mandolin, and Karen Carr on bass and vocals. Most of the band are second and third-generation musicians who now play old time mountain music influenced by their families and communities.

Big Country Bluegrass at Carter Fold Tonight

Big Country BluegrassBig Country Bluegrass was formed by husband and wife Tommy and Teresa Sells in the late 1980s and took its’ name from Tommy’s coon-hunting buddy Jimmy Martin’s instrumental Big Country. The group delivers their own hard driving and heartfelt style of bluegrass music, and it makes them crowd favorites wherever they perform. Whether it’s at a festival in Missouri, on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry, or at a small, intimate concert in their hometown of Independence, Virginia, the band brings back memories reminiscent of the early days of bluegrass music.

Tim White, The VW Boys and Friends at Carter Fold Saturday

The VW BoysSaturday, March 21st, 2015, at 7:30 p.m., the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a concert of bluegrass music by the Tim White and the VW Boys and Friends. Tim White is the banjo picker, guitar picker, and baritone singer for the VW Boys. He knew Dave Vaught for several years prior to both of these gentlemen forming the VW Boys band which features bluegrass music, magic, and comedy in one self-contained variety show. Fat Albert Blackburn is the third leg of the VW Boys and plays upright bass and sings lead. Dave Vaught is an excellent entertainer and magician who brings his talents to the group as well as playing guitar and singing lead and harmony parts. The VW Boys will provide plenty of dance music for the cloggers and flatfoot dancers at the Fold by having Kevin Jackson accompany them on fiddle. Glen Harlow will also sit in as the group’s mandolin player.

The Hillbilly Gypsies at Historic Carter Fold Saturday

The Hillbilly GypsiesSaturday, March 7th, 2015, at 7:30 p.m. the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a concert by the Hillbilly Gypsies. Admission to the concert is $10 for adults, $1 for children 6 to 11, under age 6 free. The Hillbilly Gypsies are a West Virginia native string band who specialize in playing their own homegrown style of Appalachian old time music, mixed with a hard drivin’ bluegrass sound. In addition to their original material, the Hillbilly Gypsies play a mix of traditional bluegrass and catchy old fiddle tunes. They are best appreciated at a live show.

Traditional Bluegrass by Acoustic Heritage at Carter Fold Saturday

Appalachian Trail Leads to Carter Fold Saturday

Appalachian Trail BandHiltons, VA -- Appalachian Trail is a union of seasoned and innovative singers, songwriters, and musicians who are breaking new ground in the bluegrass arena. Ireland, Scotland, England, Russia, Sweden, Canada, Holland, and Switzerland are some of the countries that have hosted the talents of the individuals in this band, as well as coast-to-coast here at home. Formed in 1984, the band combines strong lead vocals, tight harmonies, and distinctive picking. Saturday, February 21st, 2015, at 7:30 p.m., the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a concert of traditional bluegrass music by Appalachian Trail. Adult admission to the concert is $10, $1 for children 6 to 11, and under age 6 free.

Celebrate Valentine's Day with Glen Harlow Band at the Fold

Glen HarlowGlen Harlow has been singing and playing music since early childhood, learning to sing gospel music from his mother and father. He is a studio musician and a veteran of many Mountain Empire bluegrass and acoustic groups. Joining Glen will be a great lineup of accomplished and award-winning area musicians. Glen Rose, from Jonesboro, Tennessee, will be playing banjo. Rick Barker, from Mendota, Virginia, will be playing guitar and doing vocals. Kevin Jackson, from nearby Bristol, Virginia, is well-known to Carter Fold audiences as one of the finest fiddle players in our region. Kevin will be doing vocals and playing the fiddle. Mitchell Bentley, from Coeburn, Virginia, will be singing and playing the upright bass. The group will be doing old time and bluegrass instrumental favorites as well as traditional and progressive standards.

Catch the Junior Blankenship Band at Carter Fold Saturday

Junior BlankenshipSaturday, January 24th, 2015, at 7:30 p.m., the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a concert of bluegrass music by the Junior Blankenship Band. Admission to the concert is $10 for adults, $1 for children 6 to 11, under age 6 free. Junior Blankenship was raised where mountain bluegrass was a corner stone to the family culture. Junior’s father, the late Hillard Blankenship, drove Dr. Ralph Stanley’s tour bus for many years. Junior and his father formed a band called the Rocky Mountain Boys. Soon after that, Ralph Stanley called Junior and asked him to become a Clinch Mountain Boy after Keith Whitley left their group. Junior was only seventeen at the time. He stayed with Dr. Stanley until 1989.

Through his many years of performing, radio, and production, Tim is both well-known and well-connected in bluegrass and old time circles throughout the U.S. and abroad. Tim will bring along some of the region’s finest musicians for this special show at the Carter Family Fold. Saturday, January 17th, 2015, at 7:30 p.m., the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a concert of bluegrass music by the Tim White and Friends. Admission to the concert is $10 for adults, $1 for children 6 to 11, under age 6 free.

Tyler Williams Band at Carter Family Fold Saturday

Tyler WilliamsHiltons, VA -- Tyler Williams grew up in Ohio and moved to Johnson City, Tennessee, to study bluegrass music. Ashley Davis is from Fayetteville, North Carolina. When the two of them met at the Galax Old Time Fiddlers Convention in 2007 it wasn’t long before they teamed up to form a band. Saturday, January 10, 2015, at 7:30 p.m. the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a concert of bluegrass music by the Tyler Williams Band. Admission to the concert is $10 for adults, $1 for children 6 to 11, under age 6 free.

McLain Family Band, Xtreme Dance Company at Carter Fold Saturday

McLain Family BandDirect from the hills of Kentucky, The McLain Family Band has become internationally known as one of the most spontaneous, creative and spirited groups performing contemporary Appalachian bluegrass music. During the years 1968 – 1990, they performed in all 50 states and 62 countries during 14 international concert tours, some as musical ambassadors of the U.S. Department of State. The McLain Family Band played at the Grand Ole Opry, Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Lincoln Center and the Carter Fold. They were featured at thousands of festivals and concerts and performed as soloists in more than 230 appearances with orchestras. The first Saturday of the new year, January 3, 2015, at 7:30 p.m. the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a concert of bluegrass music by a long time popular group at the Fold, the McLain Family Band. Admission to the concert is $10 for adults, $1 for children 6 to 11, under age 6 free.

Adam Steffey Joins Grayson Highlands Band at Carter Fold Saturday

Adam SteffeySaturday, December 28th, 2014, at 7:30 p.m., the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a concert of old time music by the Grayson Highlands Band with special guest Adam Steffey. The Grayson Highlands Band, from the Jefferson, North Carolina area, plays a variety of old time music, ranging from rousing fiddle tunes to traditional songs and ballads. They are regulars at the Christmas in July Festival, the Albert Hash Festival, the Rugby Fall Festival, the Greater Lansing Area Festival, and the Wayne Henderson Festival. They have also been the guest band on the Gary Poe Live radio show several times, and have won numerous awards at regional fiddlers’ conventions. Admission to the concert is $10 for adults, $1 for children 6 to 11, under age 6 free.

Duty Free Bluegrass at Carter Family Christmas Sat. Dec 20th

Carter Family ChristmasHiltons, VA -- Saturday, December 20st, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a special Christmas program. In lieu of admission, please bring a donation of canned goods for the local food bank (suggested amount $10 per person). Those not bringing a canned goods donation are asked to make a donation of $10 for adults with all proceeds going to the Food Bank. Anyone under 12 will be admitted free of charge. Those attending are asked to bring finger foods, two-liter drinks, and cups, plates, or napkins. Christmas music will be performed as refreshments are served. Afterwards, we’ll have music by the Duty Free Bluegrass Band. Musicians donate their time for this special Christmas show.
