Special Janette Carter Memorial Gospel Concert Nov 16th

The VW BoysSunday, November 16th, 2014, at 2:30 p.m., the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a special gospel concert by Tim White and the VW Boys & Adam McPeak and Mountain Thunder. 2014 marks the seventh annual gospel event in honor of Janette Carter. This year’s concert will also pay tribute to the late Larry McPeak who passed away earlier this year. Admission to the concert is $10 for adults, children ages 6 to 11 $3, under age 6 free. Tickets will be available only at the door on the day of the concert. Doors will open at 1:00 p.m.

North Carolina's Tune Town Old Time Band at Carter Fold

Tune Town Old Time BandHiltons, VA -- The Tune Town Old Time Band is a North Carolina based old time band that has been making quite a name for themselves in old time music circles for the past several years. Tune Town has six musicians in the group. The band features two guitars, two fiddles, and the clawhammer banjo. Dr. Mark Handy will be playing banjo and helping out on vocals. When he’s not playing old time, Dr. Handy practices family medicine in Abingdon, Virginia.

Echoes of the Blueridge Music at Carter Fold Nov 8th

Kilby and Martha SpencerHiltons, VA -- Echoes of the Blueridge is a relatively new old time band that sprang from the famous Spencer family of the Whitetop Mountain Band. Kilby and Martha Spencer are the son and daughter of Thornton and Emily Spencer. Martha plays with the Whitetop Mountain Band, and Kilby often does as well. Kilby has his own old time band – the Crooked Road Ramblers. Martha often travels overseas with Jackson Cunningham - who also plays with the Whitetop Mountain Band – as a duet.

Wayne Henderson & Friends at Carter Fold Nov 1st

Wayne HendersonHiltons, VA -- Wayne Henderson’s top-notch finger-picking is a source of great pleasure and pride to his friends, family, and neighbors in Grayson County, Virginia. His guitar playing has also been enjoyed at Carnegie Hall, in three national tours of Masters of the Steel-String Guitar, and in seven nations in Asia. In addition to his reputation as a guitarist, Henderson is a luthier of great renown. He is a recipient of a 1995 National Heritage Award presented by the National Endowment for the Arts. He produces about twenty instruments a year, mostly guitars; he is almost as well-known for the mandolins he has made. Doc Watson owned a Henderson mandolin.

Big Country BluegrassBig Country Bluegrass was formed by husband and wife Tommy and Teresa Sells in the late 1980s and took its’ name from Tommy’s coon-hunting buddy Jimmy Martin’s instrumental Big Country. The group delivers their own hard driving and heartfelt style of bluegrass music, and it makes them crowd favorites wherever they perform. Whether it’s at a festival in Missouri, on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry, or at a small, intimate concert in their hometown of Independence, Virginia, the band brings back memories reminiscent of the early days of bluegrass music. Saturday, October 25th, 2014, at 7:30 p.m., the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a concert by Big Country Bluegrass. Whitetop is an area rich in old time music tradition, and this band has deep roots in mountain music. Saturday, October 18th, 2014, at 7:30 p.m., the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a concert of old time music by the Whitetop Mountain Band. Admission to the concert is $10 for adults, $1 for children 6 to 11, under age 6 free.

The Hillbilly Gypsies Return to Carter Fold Saturday

Hillbilly GypsiesHiltons, VA -- Saturday, October 11th, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a concert by the Hillbilly Gypsies. Admission to the concert is $10 for adults, $1 for children 6 to 11, under age 6 free. The Hillbilly Gypsies are a West Virginia native string band who specialize in playing their own homegrown style of Appalachian old time music, mixed with a hard drivin’ bluegrass sound. In addition to their original material, the Hillbilly Gypsies play a mix of traditional bluegrass and catchy old fiddle tunes. They are best appreciated at a live show. The Gypsies perform in the old fashioned style, around a single microphone. Their show has the feel of a barn dance, and it transports you back in time. One thing’s for sure – you’ll want to get up and dance. They’ve been a group for over ten years, and they have played at many national festivals, concert halls, and theaters.

Foot Stompin’ Friday Features New Ballard’s Branch Bogtrotters

New Ballard's Branchy BogtrottersHiltons, VA -- The New Ballard’s Branch Bogtrotters took their group’s name from the original Bogtrotters, the famous Galax, Virginia, area band of the 1930s, and because band leader Dennis Hall lives on Ballard’s Branch. Galax is home to the world-renowned Old Time Fiddler’s Convention, and the area has traditionally produced some of the country’s finest old time string bands. Carrying on that rich musical tradition, the New Ballard’s Branch Bogtrotters features Dennis Hall on guitar, Leon Frost on mandolin, Jesse Morris on bass, Eddie Bond on fiddle, and Josh Ellis on banjo. The guys have been playing together for over twelve years. Friday, October 10th, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a special Foot Stompin’ Friday series concert by the New Ballard’s Branch Bogtrotters, an old time band. Admission to the concert is $10 for adults, $1 for children 6 to11, under age 6 free.

He’s also worked with David Peterson & 1946 as well as country singer and guitarist Jerry Reed. Most recently, Michael accompanied Kody Norris on fiddle at his last show at the Fold. Michael will be backed by Fiddlegrass – some of bluegrass music’s finest musicians. Saturday, September 20th, 2014, at 7:30 p.m., the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a concert of bluegrass music by Michael Feagan and Fiddlegrass. The Carter Fold Host The Local Honeys, Nott Brothers Sept 13

The Local HoneysHiltons, VA -- The Local Honeys are a vibrant, female trio specializing in old time music. The group met as students and faculty at the Kentucky Center for Traditional Music at Morehead State University in Morehead, Kentucky, and are multi-instrumentalists and vocalists. They incorporate comedy and dance into their performances. Montana Hobbs, Stephanie Jeter, and Linda Jean Stokley are the Local Honeys. Montana plays the clawhammer style banjo. Stephanie plays autoharp and guitar, and Linda Jean plays the old time fiddle. All do beautiful harmony vocals. The group has appeared regionally as well as internationally. The Red Barn Radio Show, the Kentucky Folk Art Center, Wallace Station, and concert tours in China, Jamaica, and the Czech Republic are just a few examples of the venues they’ve played. These young ladies consider themselves ambassadors of traditional Appalachian music and are dedicated to the preservation of traditional songs, ballads, fiddle tunes, and dance.

Crooked Road RamblersHiltons, VA -- The Crooked Road Ramblers play traditional old time dance music from the mountains of Virginia and North Carolina. Members of the band are Kilby Spencer on fiddle, John Perry on guitar, Peco Watson on clawhammer banjo, Donald Hill on guitar and vocals, Wayne Dye on mandolin, and Karen Carr on bass and vocals. Most of the band are second and third-generation musicians who now play old time mountain music influenced by their families and communities. Saturday, September 6th, 2014, at 7:30 p.m., the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a special concert by Kilby Spencer & the Crooked Road Ramblers. Admission to the concert is $10 for adults, $1 for children 6 to 11, under age 6 free.

Tim White & The VW Boys and Friends at Fold Tonight

The VW BoysHiltons, VA -- Tim White is the banjo picker, guitar picker, and baritone singer for the VW Boys. He knew Dave Vaught for several years prior to both of these gentlemen forming the VW Boys band which features bluegrass music, magic, and comedy in one self-contained variety show. Fat Albert Blackburn is the third leg of the VW Boys and plays upright bass and sings lead. Dave Vaught is an excellent entertainer and magician who brings his talents to the group as well as playing guitar and singing lead and harmony parts. The VW Boys will provide plenty of dance music for the cloggers and flatfoot dancers at the Fold by having Kevin Jackson accompany them on fiddle. Glen Harlow will also sit in as the group’s mandolin player. Saturday, August 30th, 2014, at 7:30 p.m., the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a concert of bluegrass music by the Tim White and the VW Boys and Friends. Carter Fold to Present Kody Norris & the Watauga Mountain Boys

Kody NorrisSaturday, August 23rd, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a concert of traditional bluegrass music by Kody Norris and the Watauga Mountain Boys. Kody Norris is young, confident, and bluegrass proud. He’s been fronting his own band now for over nine years, but he’s been playing bluegrass music for much longer. Kody grew up in Mountain City, Tennessee. According to Norris, playing bluegrass in the traditional style is the only way he knows how to play it – or wants to play it.

Special Carter Fold Presentation with Barter Theatre - "Ring Of Fire"

Ring Of FireWednesday, August 27th, 2014, at 7:30 p.m., the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will partner with Barter Theatre to present Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash. Admission to the show is $20 for adults, $18 for seniors over 65, and $12 for children under 16. Tickets may be purchased in advance through Barter Theatre or at the door the night of the show. Doors open at 6 p.m.
